Zane Grey’s “To the Last Man” is a novel based on the Pleasant Valley War, a violent series of events that took place in the remote area of central Arizona in the late 1880s. Grey wanted to write a factual book on the War, but anyone even remotely involved in it was reticent to speak about it. Many “facts” died with the participants so Grey ended up writing a novelized version of events. Grey did include many of the complicated issues that surrounded the War and the novel certainly highlights how events can play out in the absence of law enforcement in a more civilized setting. This was truly the Wild West! 249 pages. Copyright 2020 Rim Country Museum Press. Paperback.
